Every wedding brings together a variety of talented vendors, and I absolutely love connecting with each one. Taking the time to chat with them helps me get to know their work on a deeper level, so I can confidently recommend and rave about their services to my clients. Building these relationships allows all of us to collaborate seamlessly, ensuring you have the best wedding experience possible.
Today, I’m catching up with Kara Zborovancik, a longtime friend and an incredibly talented makeup artist based in Southwestern PA. Join us as we dive into her world of makeup artistry, sharing insights and tips that are sure to inspire!
Many people dream of having a side business like yours. How did your journey begin, Kara?
My journey began when I was just a sophomore in high school. I first showed interest in hair and spent countless hours on YouTube, watching videos of hairstyles and makeup tutorials. I got caught up in the 2016 trend of pomade dip brows and harsh cut crease eyeshadows, which marked the beginning of my love for all things esthetics. The turning point came when I did makeup for my first bride and bridal party. Despite being a beginner, the joy of making someone’s day, seeing their happiness, and being part of such a beautiful occasion made me realize that this was the reality I wanted for my future self.
Kara, I always love running into you at a wedding or event. How do you manage to book such awesome gigs?
I’m not a huge social media person, so I’m incredibly grateful that most of my clients come through word of mouth. Past clients and their recommendations on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms have been invaluable. This year, I was blessed to join the vendor list at the beautiful Willow wedding and event venue, thanks to Morgan Thompson. This opportunity has allowed me to book amazing clients and work alongside talented vendors, many of whom I’ve grown up with. Being part of a small town also means that people are incredibly supportive and help spread the word about my services.
What do you love about makeup and this job?
I love how makeup can be both simple and complex. There’s a special tone of passion and excitement in my voice whenever I talk about it, which makes it feel less like work and more like a calling. Working with clients to perfect their desired look and playing an important role in their special day is incredibly rewarding. I strive to create a stress-free environment for my clients and am constantly thinking of new ways to make their experience enjoyable, whether through goodie bags, makeup tips, or even charity events. My dream is to host makeup-related events in the future. The beauty world is always evolving, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Do you have any advice for brides looking for the right makeup artist?
My advice is to communicate your vision clearly. Never hold back on explaining exactly what you want in your makeup look. It’s also important to review a makeup artist’s portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your expectations. As much as I’d love to please everyone, I might not always be the perfect fit for every bride’s desired look. Research and open communication are key. Building a connection with your makeup artist is equally important so that you feel comfortable and confident. Makeup artists play a vital role in the early hours of a bride’s day, setting the tone for what’s to come. For me, creating a comfortable and supportive environment is a top priority.
Do you recommend every bride get a trial done before the wedding?
Yes, I always recommend scheduling at least one trial before the wedding day. Trials are essential to perfecting the look you’re seeking and identifying any tweaks that need to be made. Even small details, like a lip color or an eyeshadow shade, can make a big difference. A trial eliminates unnecessary stress on the big day. Many of my clients schedule their trial for their bridal showers, which is a great way to make the most of the occasion.
Do you usually work on your own?
Yes, I typically work on my own when it comes to makeup. However, for larger bridal parties, it’s common to have multiple makeup artists involved. I’ve also collaborated with hairstylists, helping with small tasks like curling hair or holding bobby pins. Working alongside other vendors has been a wonderful experience, allowing me to make new friends, build clientele, and feel like part of a supportive wedding community.
What about the bridesmaids? Is it recommended to use you for both the bride and bridesmaids?
I love being part of not just the bride’s big day but also the bridal party’s. It’s up to the bride to decide whether she wants everyone to get ready together with a cohesive look or prefers individual choices. While it’s not a requirement to include the entire bridal party, I’m always available for anyone who needs me. Sometimes, bridesmaids are hesitant at first but change their minds after seeing others’ makeup. Either way, I’m there to support everyone.
What kind of music is usually playing in your studio when you’re in the zone?
Variety is key in my studio. When I’m setting up, I love listening to artists like NeedtoBreathe, Lauren Daigle, and Hillsong Worship. This helps me start the day with positive vibes and gratitude. Once clients arrive, the playlist shifts to their preferences to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Whether it’s a wedding playlist or another genre that brings joy, my goal is to make everyone feel relaxed and happy.
